What is linea? With rich knowledge from COINSTRATEGISTS, the article below will answer all your questions in an easy-to-understand and detailed way, helping you grasp information quickly and effectively.

WHAT IS LINEA?

Linea is a Zk Rollup Layer solution using zkEVM technology developed by the ConsenSys empire, which has officially launched the Public Testnet. It is also a formidable competitor with potentially powerful layers like zkSync and Polygon zkEVM.

On March 28, 2023, ConsenSys zkEVM was officially renamed Linea, signaling layer 2 has huge potential thanks to the ConsenSys empire behind it.

HOW LINEA WORKS

To understand how Linea works, users need to understand the concept of Rollups:

  • Rollups are tools that help extend Ethereum’s capabilities by aggregating multiple transactions into one block and sending them to Ethereum. In other words, each Rollup block sent to Ethereum will be a summary of multiple transactions within it.
  • Similarly, ZK Rollups uses Zero Knowledge proofs to prove the validity of transactions in the block before sending it to Ethereum. The Layer 1 Ethereum smart contract then simply verifies this proof instead of re-executing each transaction, resulting in significant gas fee savings.
  • In particular, zkEVM, the programming language for the ZK Rollup solution, is compatible with EVM. zkEVM is divided into 4 different types based on EVM compatibility, and types 1 to 4 have gradually decreasing compatibility.

Linea will continue to develop zkEVM type 2, which is compatible with EVM at the virtual server level but with minor modifications to increase proof-of-proof speed. However, some apps in this category may still be incompatible.

HIGHLIGHTS ONLY LINEA HAS

APPLY ZKEVM TYBE 2 TECHNOLOGY

The adoption of zkEVM (a fully EVM-compatible Zk-Rollup solution) will provide a better product development experience for programmers. This layer 2 composability will also be stronger thanks to Ethereum’s structural analogy (type 2 has more EVM compatibility than type 3.4), thereby making it possible for DApps on Ethereum to simply migrate to the zk-Rollup chain without having to modify many source code sources.

DEVELOPED BY CONSENSYS COMPANY

The empire has well-known projects on the market such as Metamask, Infura… In terms of capital raised, it can be considered to have surpassed all projects with products developed based on technology. zkEVM such as zkSync, Scroll, Polygon zkEVM.

In particular, the company’s right-hand man, ConsenSys R&D, has had deep expertise in Rollup research since 2019 and then devoted a lot of resources to developing the type 2 zkEVM in the following years to launch the current Layer 2 Linea.

PROGRAMMER-FRIENDLY

The advantage of Linea is that it has a direct connection and integration with products such as Metamask, Infura, Truffle, Besu. In which:

ConsenSys products are integrating with Linea
  • Metamask: Built-in Metamask wallet when developers develop products on Linea.
  • Infura: Developers are provided with Infura tools such as APIs, developer tools, Web3 infrastructure, etc. for its products on Linea.
  • Truffle: Truffle is used as a launch, test, and bug fix for Solidity smart contracts before applying them to dApps.
  • Besu: A place to optimize zkEVM testing through the battle-tested process.

With the tools available that ConsenSys provides to Linea, developers don’t need to build or struggle with the most basic pieces of the puzzle themselves, but just focus on creating innovations for Web3 when building dApps on layer 2.

PROJECT TEAM

What is Linea? Linea was developed by ConsenSys, so the team behind ConsenSys is also the same people who developed this layer 2, including:

  • Joseph Lubin (Founder, CEO): Founded ConsenSys in 2014.
  • Andrew Keys: Co-founder of ConsenSys and currently Managing Partner of ConsenSys Capital.
  • Kavita Gupta: Executive in Residence at ConsenSys and a director of ConsenSys Ventures.

INVESTORS AND PARTNERS

ConsenSys has raised more than $726 million, with the following round details:

  • Series C: ConsenSys raises $200 million at a valuation of $3.2 billion from Animoca Brands, Coinbase Ventures, HSBC…
  • Series D: ConsenSys raises $450 million at a $7 billion valuation led by ParaFi Capital along with Microsoft, SoftBank and Temasek.

ConsenSys is also one of the few companies in the market to receive investment from traditional funds such as Temasek, SoftBank and leading companies such as Microsoft, Mastercard…

SIMILAR PROJECTS

Some projects using zkEVM Rollup technology similar to Linea can be mentioned such as: zkSync Era, Starknet, Polygon zkEVM,…

CONCLUDE

My advice to you is to be careful and consider carefully before investing in any blockchain project. Despite the potential and strong support from large companies, investing always has its own risks. Please carefully research the technology and development strategy of the project before making a decision.
